Wal-Mart T-Mobile Plans

The guy at Wal-Mart seemed like his tread mill ran slow & had no idea what I was asking Smh. If I take a T-Mobile phone & purchase a prepaid plan at Wal-Mart what's the difference from just starting at plan directly thru T-Mobile ? Do I have to buy a card every month or do they have monthly plans ? Do they have 4G lte or is it 3G ? Just trying to figure all this out before I buy one for my daughter.

According to the site, you can bring any unlocked GSM phone, so not much different if you went from AT&T to Tmo.

It appears to be just 3G, 2.5 GB of data then throttled to 2G.
