Wallpaper Distortion

Hi all,

I'm trying to set a picture as wallpaper on the MT4G but I'm having a good deal of difficulty. I can crop the picture and in the preview it's correct but on the home screen it becomes distorted, as if "zoomed in." I had this trouble on my Slide but I had hoped this wouldn't be an issue on this phone. Any suggestions or apps that might help?

Thanks

I had the same issue with my Slide and have noticed the same on my new
4G. I asked this exact question a few months ago when I had the issue on the Slide and a forum participant came back with what I felt was the answer. He said that for pictures to work properly they have to be specifically rendered for the screen size and exact resolution of the screen. If they aren't you will get the "zoom" effect or, it will be the opposite and to small. Since most of us don't have the developer tools to render pictures to the exact specifications of what ever screen we have, we are stuck with what we get with the built in croping tool. I guess that is why you will see Wallpapers and Themes built for specific phones and screen sizes. If you have ever owned a Blackberry and looked for Wallpapers and Themes you will notice they are built for each specific model and sometimes will list the screen resolution. In most cases you can't use a Wallpaper or Theme built for one BB on a BB with a different model number. I guess Android is the same.

That's exactly the problem. Unfortunately this is something that is across the entire Android OS line and from my knowledge is still an "issue" in FroYo as well. I quote issue because I'm not sure if this was actually intentional on Google's part, but either way it is slightly annoying.

Your best bet if it bothers you too much is to try and find images that are either the same size or larger than your screens resolution. Obviously this doesn't completely fix the issue, but it's a start.

This has been asked and answered elsewhere on the forums, but here's what it boils down to:

You may have noticed that HTC's Sense UI scrolls the background a bit when you swipe through your home screens? This means that you need a background image that is actually wider than the myTouch's native resolution -- twice as wide. So in order to keep your photos from being zoomed and cropped, you need to use wallpapers that are 960x800 -- still 800 pixels tall, but 960px wide, instead of the native 480px.

I ended up re-rendering and cropping a few of my favorite wallpapers to these dimensions, and they work perfectly. No zooming or cropping at all. Another solution is to run some other app that handles wallpaper differently. I think I read somewhere that Launcher Pro might be able to do "static" rendering, without scrolling the backgrounds when swiping through your home screens.

This is true with all Android devices, not just HTC Sense. The wallpaper in stock Android also scrolls when swiping between screens.

Great to know that... I'll try it on a few of my Formula 1 pictures that I used to use on my Blackberry. I miss the pics... but not the Blackberry!

This is a bit off topic but does anyone know how to or if it is possible to change the opacity of icons and widgets on the homescreens?
