If you have other lines on the account like basic phones or a line you could careless about having unlimited, use that as the upgrade. Once you've upgraded reactivate the phone that was previously on that line which will then deactivate the S3 or whatever phone your buying and then activate it on your line with unlimited data. Another way is adding a new line then, use a basic phone Laying around and activate it on the new line, Then you can activate the phone you purchased on any line you want.

The first option, I'm not talking about an alternate upgrade, you must activate it on that line, then follow the steps.

Won't you need to buy a data plan for the basic phone line?

You can drop it once you re-activate the dumbphone. Only problem is if that person needs a new phone and there are no other upgrades available. Adding another line gets around that but that's not really too much cheaper than paying full retail. Also be careful with 3rd party retailers as some have their own TOS which prevent transferring equipment or dropping within the first 6 months.

I'm on a family plan with my parents (who just have basic phones and i'm the only one with a smartphone) and since they rarely ever upgrade and I was already getting the S3 through BB as an exchange, I told them to use one of their available upgrades and get the S3 and then I'd sell it on Ebay for them. It didn't mess with my unlimited at all and I made a little money for them. Win all around.

I want this phone badly right now lol. I have three smart phones with unlimited data (we use about 3GB per month at most), and getting the new phone subsidized will cause us to get the new share plan. The bad part is that the bill will be more than it is right now. :(

We only have 1400 mins for family lines, but we barely use over half that. We have unlimited texting already. So getting unlimited minutes will not be needed at all and we'll lose are possible unlimited data. :(

You're not required to switch to the Share Everything plan. Unless you add a line, you'll lose unlimited on whichever line you upgrade but it won't affect the others. You just add the line based tiered data packages (2, 5, or 10GB) for the line upgrading. Share Everything is merely an additional option for existing customers (at least until Verizon decides to change that).

So is there a workaround for my husband? He is an iPhone junkie (and is on ATT) but when he saw my S3 (and the battery life), he wanted one. He'd need to open a new line on Verizon and port his phone number. He's a very heavy data user on his current plan with ATT. Any way to get him unlimited on Verizon? ATT has aweful reception in our neighborhood.

My line just got upgraded to the S3 and my DD's line got upgraded to the GNex so neither of us have any upgrades for the next 1+ years.

New customers are out of luck as far as unlimited goes. No way around it.

Sidenote, it looks like add-a-line may not work for existing customers. Seems that trying to add a new line online requires a change to Share Everything for all phones except the GS3.

I transferred an upgrade from one of my dumbphone lines, paid the subsidized price, and if the online account manager is to be believed, I still have unlimited data. Even the Best Buy CSR thought I'd be automagically switched to 2GB. Of course, they could flip the switch at the beginning of my next billing period...

How do you actually reactivate the old phone? I plan on ordering the Note 2 online soon and will have to do the activation and reactivation myself which I've never actually done before. Upgrading the way you say by using my extra dumbphone line, activating Note 2 on that line, reactivating dumbphone, then activating Note 2 on my unlimited line.

Also what charges are incurred? I know there will be a $30 upgrade fee but will I be charged a prorated data fee since I will have to add data to the line for the few moments the Note 2 is active on it.

Lastly man, thanks a ton foe your advice on these boards!! In your opinion if I want to assure that I absolutely get the Note 2 on or before the release date, is it best to preorder or go early to a store?

I'm so lost. I'm due for an upgrade on my line on 11/21. I have my line and my brother has a line on my account. They're both individual plans. We're not on a family plan, they're both separate lines we just get billed on the same bill. I have unlimited data, he does not. How do I keep my unlimited data then? Btw I have a gs3 and he has an iPhone 4.

In your scenario, you need to use your brother's upgrade, not your own. Once you take an upgrade on your line, you will lose your unlimited data.

If your brother was due for an upgrade, then you could use his upgrade and keep your unlimited data. This is assuming he is happy with his iPhoney 4 and willing to wait another 2 years for an upgrade.
