So last night I went to split off my parent's family plan and put the phone in my name with my own plan since I'm getting married next month. In the middle of doing all this fun stuff, the lady tells me that by doing this, I am 'voiding' my warranty on the phone.

I've never heard this before, and nor do I understand how I 'voided' my warranty. I'm not too worried if it is (I have a squaretrade warranty), but can someone possibly enlighten me as to why they just said this?

when you assume liability on an already active line the warranty stays with the original plan. Thus by taking over the phone (assuming liability) you lose your warranty

The phone warranty follows where it was activated, as soon as you assume liability the warranty is no more.its like you bought it off craigslist, the phone might be new but its locked to that line, not the one your changing it to
