Was rooted, then restored, now not rooted? What do I need to do?

I was rooted. At least I'm pretty sure I was - all the root checkers and root explorers all worked like I was rooted.

Then I was having a few issues and I decided to just give it a clean erase and what-not through System Settings > Back up and reset > Factory data reset.

Now, I still have SuperUser installed and everything, but it says that root cannot be obtained while attempting to update. Also, trying to use ES Explorer to root explore, it says that it can't do it anymore.

What do I need to do to get root back?

Just a guess, but it sounds like the root procedure you used left the stock recovery installed, instead of CWM or TWRP. Assuming you're on Sprint, follow Skunape's instructions in the forum, and make sure you follow the part about not letting the phone reboot.

Actually I kept trying stuff and found that TWRP was, in fact, installed still so I booted into it and fixed permissions. Then I booted the system and was able to change permissions with explorer. So I think I'm good now but thanx guys!

Nope - never mind. It's weird... It's like I have a partial root now... I have TWRP installed, and I can change permissions on files in the \system\etc\ folder - but only with Root Browser Lite. I can't change them with ES Explorer or Astro, and Root Checker Basic says that I'm not rooted - even after I grant it permissions from SuperUser!

Looks like I'll be rooting again... So thanx for the recommendation, Meyerweb!

you don't have to completely start from scratch. If you still have twrp just boot into twrp and reflash team epic root from recovery.

What process did you use to root? Can you boot into recovery and see what recovery you have (TWRP, CWM or the stock recovery)?

and read what's in the second green box. I suspect the root procedure you used didn't remove the two referenced files, and when you rebooted you ended up back at the stock recovery. My suggestion would be to re-root following the procedure linked to above.

This is pretty much what happened to me. If you followed the same rooting guide that I did, there's a file you downloaded that just needs to be flashed again - I believe it's the TeamEpicRoot.zip or something.
