A few years ago I was able to get Waze to work on my cellphone.
I could take it in my car and get a map to come up with the regular GPS directions/routes etc.

This was without using a data plan. My phone was in airplane mode.
And I had no Wifi connection.

I just turned on Location/GPS and I was good to go.

I just tried it again yesterday for the first time since then and it is not working.
Has Waze changed?

Does anyone know how I can get it to work again?

I believe you have to set your destination in Wi-Fi or data first and then you can take the phone with you and use basic navigation without any connection..

Try first a Power Off & Restart.

Thanks for your replies.
I found out the problem (was lucky).
There is a Google setting for high GPS sensitivity that needs to be enabled.
Go figure!

But here's a crazy thing.
If I just enabled GPS it wouldn't work. I needed Wifi enabled too.
BUT... I had no Wifi connection!
Go figure!

Well I spoke too soon. :(
That was yesterday, today things changed.

I started off by going for a short drive, just with GPS turned on and Wifi for good measure (even though I had no wifi signal).
Waze wasn't working.

Then I returned home, turned on my Wifi and started up Waze. Waze woke up.
I did a short drive and it was now picking up my movement/streets.

I kept my fingers crossed and ventured further out.
Waze lost whatever signal it had been picking up and stopped tracking.

So now I'm back to square one.

I'd like to figure out what changed from 6-7 years ago when I was driving
in the same circumstances and Waze worked.

Time for an update.
I got things figured out. :)

I got it to work. I just had forgotten what I had done 6-7 years ago.
I had forgotten that I had turned on my cell tower reception!
Normally my phone is in airplane mode. I rarely make calls.

So the 'secret' to getting it to work again was to turn on:
-cell reception
-GPS/location
-Data (not sure if this was necessary)

When I was doing all my previous tests my cell reception was off.

The mapping was spotty, but it worked. It was spotty because the small city I live in doesn't have many cell towers.
When I was driving in Toronto 6-7 years ago the mapping was much better due to the higher cell tower coverage.
