I've been using sliding messaging but its notifications settings are horrible, I have it set for one short vibrate and it does one short then one long. I am now trying textra and I am thinking its very good but what makes it different from chomp. And what do you recommend

Textra is created by the same developer that makes Chomp. Textra looks nicer and has some nice animation, but Chomp has more features between the two. I'm sure they will be adding more features to Textra.
I tried Textra, Chomp, GoSMS, and Handcent. I prefer Handcent the best.

Textra also doesnt have the mms wifi problem that almost every other messaging app has. I am beginning to love it, i dont need features, i just need group chat that works well with iphones because thats what most of my friends have

I prefer go SMS for the different signature per contact feature.
Handcent has that as well but it doesn't work as well.

If you're looking for a group chat, have you tried google hangout?

No I haven't but I wasn't really looking for a bbm type messaging app

Everything I prefer about sms is the popup. I hardly ever go into the inbox.
I tried GoSMS and it really sux. Nothing customizable. I have seriously tried Handcent, three different times. I always uninstall it after a short run. I default back to the stock SMS with SMS Popup. The layout of the popup window is just right. Smaller app runs without hiccups.

I use gosms pro. I really like it especially with the iphone theme.

What do mean nothing customizable in GO SMS? Thats what I use and its totally customizable

The popup. My entire post is about the popup window. I don't use the rest of the app. GoSMS popup window was the least useful. The app itself had half the customization of Handcent.

I don't use the popup, but the rest of the customizations are equal to handcent and the signature customization is better.

Both apps can change signature, background, tones, icons, and led color per user.
Go allowed sms backups to a file but now you have to do it to the cloud.
