I do the opposite. When I am home, I shut Cell Data off and keep WiFi on. When I leave my house I turn Cell Data back on and shut off WiFi. I also keep everything off until I need it. Location (GPS), Blutooth, etc. My phone loves this arrangement and I get incredible battery life. I started doing this when I was out one night and I felt how warm my phone was getting in my pocket. I checked it and the battery was taking a hell of hit while searching for a WiFi signal when some app (which I had set to WiFi Data only) was trying to sync data and use my location services. The phone was obsessed with trying to find a WiFi signal on a open network nearby.
Nothing worse on battery life then these radios constantly searching for signals, especially if I don't need them. You should be able to depend on Android to do these things for you, but I have found they don't always work out and now do some of it manually.
