I'm curious to what do you guys look for on your phones to see if it's defective or not when you first get it? I plan on trying to get one in store, and want to check basics because when I got my note 4, the gps wasn't calibrating correctly.

Off the top of my head:

1. Is the S-Pen easily removable?
2. Is there any colored hue on the screen?
3. Is your phone charging? Both wireless and wired?
4. Do all of the buttons of the phone function correctly?
5. Do all cameras work?

I always put it through its paces (run a couple of synthetics to make sure I don't run into weird heat issues)

I always view a totally white image to see if I get any temperature differences across the entire panel

I typically don't even look at battery life for three or four days...Android is Android and needs time to settle.

Just test it all out. I tested the brightness, GPS on the way to work, Bluetooth, etc.
