What are the differences between using google translate and a dictionary app?

A dictionary lists the common usages of a word - in the language of that word. IOW, a French dictionary lists the French word and, in French, the common uses.

Google Translate, if you give it a single word, translates the most common usage into your language.

Using a dictionary, and putting the entire entry into a translator program like Google Translate, might be a good combination of both techniques.
