i was thinking about flashing one of the stupidfast kernals that has overclocking but i dont really know the negatives of what mighthappen if i do..

Less Battery Life, More crashing, more heating up, less overall phone life

for a negligible increase in speed

If the kernel is only overclocked then yes, poorer battery life. If it's overclocked and undervolted you could actually get more battery life out of it.

Each phone is a little different - some can handle higher clock speeds and lower voltages than others. Once you find the acceptable range for your phone, you won't have to worry about crashing. And hey - testing is half the fun :D

Heating up depends on the kernel and its developer. Some will cause your phone to be a little warmer, some won't.

Potentially shorter phone life, yes. But are you really going to be using the same phone 3 or 4 years from now? And it might last even longer than that.

so if its the Geeknik's StupidFast Kernel for the Samsung Fascinate 12.19.10 would it be good or bad? lol

Depends on what ROM you are running and what your build and baseband are. If you are on Froyo, you will not be able to use these kernels, as I believe they are incompatible. If you are looking for an overclocked kernel, the only one I am aware of is from nemesis2all and can be found in Jaekar99's Themes, ROMs, Kernels, and Boot Animations thread HERE

i'm not running froyo ;) im on 2.1update lol.. the crap verizon has left fascinates to scrape by on. lol

Is this what you're talking about?

EC10 OC UV Voodoo EnderstSpecial Froyo TouchWiz based -nemesis2all - New Overclock options: 3-30-11 - (All Overclock warning apply)

- v2, added cifs and cwm
- Overclocked to 1200 Undervolted -50mv
- Standard Voltage - Overclockable
- Uber OTB - New

Looks like you have a few options here. If your main goal is to overclock, I would try the overclocked and undervolted kernel first. If you get any lock ups, then go with the standard voltage overclocked kernel. And whenever you flash a kernel make sure your battery is fully charged or your meter will be off (or you will have to recalibrate your battery to fix this).

how is it junk? D:

I don't know enough about the stupidfast kernels to really say yes or no. It is never a good sign when a dev abandons and stops supporting something as I read in the link you provided. I do remember seeing a lot of people running the stupidfast kernels when I first started rooting. So perhaps you may want to hold off on flashing them until someone who used to use them can weigh in on this.

I flashed the stupidfast kernel on my brother's Fascinate (which was on Eclair). It ran fast and smooth, with just a couple bugs: minor clicking/popping/static while on a call, and some other minor thing that I can't remember. Didn't use it for too long because my brother makes A LOT of phone calls and those noises bothered him.

I used Stupidfast exclusively when I was using DJ05 and DL09.. In a quick summary:
v1.54 - solid good kernel. Had some issues with audio popping. No stability issues at all - does not support boot animations. GPS was a bit slow to respond at times.
Test v12-19-10: - Very stable - I had no problems. Will support boot animations, it is slightly overclocked and is undervolted.. excellent battery life. GPS lock rocket fast <10 seconds in most cases. No connection issues for me.. no audio issues for me.
Test v12-20-10: More undervolted than the 12-19 version.. not as stable - lock ups and GPS would not lock in under 1 minute... In a few cases not at all. I also had issues with audio popping. Only used it for a few hours in favor of 12-19.

Try them if you find one that works well keep using it.
