What can cause a battery to be fine one day and then drain overnight?

I have had some problems with my battery draining on my Samsung Galaxy S3. It is about 14 mos old. I have force stopped several apps and done all the power saving advice I have found online. So it seemed to work and was lasting 14 hrs at least until now.

The last few days it started draining too fast again. Last night it went to critically low while idle. I have uninstalled some game apps I wasn't using and don't have many anyway.

Any ideas what could be the problem?

Sometimes when the phone overheats, (usually by running apps) can cause the battery to drain rapidly.
