What causes keyboard layout to change automatically in portrait mode?

This has been bugging me lately. I'm on Verizon and depending where I click to type, my portrait keyboard will show different layout. Sometimes it shows the layout with the @ and .com buttons (which I prefer) other times it won't show it. Is there a way to make it only do one?

depends on the input box. in email addy box you get the ".com". go down to the body of the email and you get the other layout. simple.
