What causes restarts?

Yesterday I was playing a game on my Huawei P20 pro & it went a big laggy at times but carried on playing anyway then all of a sudden my phone restarted itself. My phone wasn't hot. Any idea why this restart happened? Is it possible an app crashed in the background causing the kernel to panic? Or something else? My phone has never restarted since I factory reset it & set it up as a new device this was the first time. Any ideas?

kernel to panic

This was my thought as I was reading your post. I think pulling a logcat may show if it was a kernel panic, but I am not sure how to pull one or even read it (it will probably look like programming code).

Yeah I'm not sure how to do that either. I just hope it doesn't happen again.
