What Do People Have Against MotoBlur?

Hey guys,

I'm kinda a noob when it comes to Android. My phone plan is almost up (Verizon) and I can't decide between the Thunderbolt and Bionic, like a lot of people on here. I'm leaning toward the TBolt because of the praise I've heard about Sense. However, I'm wondering what's so bad about Blur that I keep hearing complaints about? I know it has something to do with the notification bar or something but idk.

Thanks,

Brian

I would encourage you to make your own opinion about sense vs blur. Everyone has an opinion on this and everyone's answer is right for THEM, not necisarrily you. Go into a store and check out an incredible next to a droid x and play with both for about 10 minutes a piece or so. Really put it through it's paces. Add stuff to the screens, move stuff around, look at all the widgets available. Which one feels more usable to YOU. Then make your choice...

Honestly I think all skins have gotten to the point were they are very usable and a lot of the draw backs that they used to have are no longer an issue.

I think the main reason people still complain about skins is because of one thing and one thing alone. When there are skins involved you can expect, at a minimum, a 3 month wait on an OS upgrade from the time google releases it. HTC and MOTO are the best at keeping the time down though and I have heard that MOTO has made the Blur even less entrenched in the OS making the upgrade process even easier for MOTO so I wouldn't let that aspect persuade you against getting the Bionic if thats what you want.

I think this blur is just about the same with a redesigned launcher. I'm glad their getting rid of the two action keys at the bottom that take you to the same place. But what did I have against blur alot but I will keep it short it was murder to my battery the launcher was slow and the Widgets looked as if they were designed with a 5 year old in mind fix those and me and blur may get along because some of their apps were great

I agree with bizz that half of it's problem is the childish looking design. I HATED the look of the launcher (not to mention it's painfully slow sometimes). With that in mind, they have a lot of good ideas with Blur and I don't hate the entire thing.

To me, it's not about the look at all. The reason I prefer a vanilla OS over blur, sense, touch wiz, or any other manufacturer overlay is because they significantly delay updates to future versions of android. Why is it that the original droid has always been the first phone updated after the N1... because it has vanilla android and an unlocked bootloader. I just wish motorola would have stuck with that formula for the rest of their devices.

Many that complain about blur are doing so because of an early experence with it. On the X it is not that bad and looks as if it has gotten even less noticeable on the bionic.
And it does not matter if it is vanilla or blur if it has the locked bootlaoder. If the bootlaoder is locked you can't update the kernel until they release it. So there is no way to get it any earlier. If the bootlaoder is unlocked when the sorce code is out there someone can make a rom out of it.

Couldn't agree with you more. What Motorola did with Blur since it's original inception I give them credit for. I still absolutely hate full-blown blur that we have seen on things like the Cliq, but it's not bad on the X and Droid 2.

The longer update process does suck so does the bootloader. But think of this as blur light. Slightly redesigned for Verizon

I also agree that the Blur on the Droid X is way more usable than the original blur. And frankly I am not all that concerned about whether the bootloader is locked.

Why does everyone say this? The blur on the Bionic, the blur on the X/2 and the blur on all other 2.1/2.2 devices are only different thanks to the launcher, and between the x/2 and the others the only difference is the look of the launcher. That said, Blur is fine. It just changes the look of the icons and notification bar, and some stock apps, and adds some nice widgets. The launcher is basically reskinned stock with the browser swapped out for contacts. Of course that is pretty easy to change with an alternate launcher. The social features are optional.

I don't have a problem with blur at all. But I do use Launcher Pro Plus and it does a good job of covering blue on my Droid X. You can get alternate Widgets in the market. If I were to get the bionic, I would still use Launcher Pro Plus. So it isn't an issue.

they are referring to the difference between blur on the high-end devices (X, D2, Bionic), and the motoblur on the low-ends (cliq, devour), which was really bad. i think thats where a lot of the ire for blur comes from, people that saw it on the devour and cliq, where it was introduced. moto did a real nice job tweaking it for the X and D2, and i havent had many qualms with it since.

plus, as a few have already mentioned, if you dont like blur, or sense, or touchwiz, or any other android UI, download launcherpro or adw and never have to look at it again. or if you really want an aosp experience, root and find a custom rom to suit your needs

It's BuTT Ugly....thanks to Launcher pro and ADW Ex most of that is gone. Then add in a nice Rom, you got the best Android on the Planet!!

Just feel lucky your choice isn't a samsung!!

Anyways, Skins are meant to enhance the phone experience for your average user. It takes, what your average joe might find not all that intuitive, and attempts to improve upon the Android experience by making it more "user friendly". Now, for my part, I think skins should be offered via the market and the manufacturers could just make $1.00 a pop while the phone comes with a clean android build. But that's just my 2 cents.

Like many posts have said above, find what is right for YOU. That is supposed to be the glory of Android, that you have the ability to make your phone behave how YOU want it to, not how others tell you it should be.

That's a good idea. The skins should be optional.

Yup. Pick what you like. I am in the rare minority that likes blur (dx) better than sense. So there are opinions everywhere.

Like most though I would much prefer stock google experience. I wish google would make providing a stock experience mandatory. The phone can ship with blur or sense or whatever but a reset can install stock.

Good luck.
