The wife dropped her TB and now it won't recognize the SIM card. The battery was hard to put back in - in fact had to monkey with the SIM tray to get it out of the way of the battery.

What do you think? Is it dead?

I would take the phone to a corporate store and have them look at it.
You want to insert the SIM card first then the battery.
