Hey Phil,

You may not have time to reply to this, but I wanted to get your opinion on what you would choose and recommend between the Nexus 5 and the Moto X. I know you love the Moto X with all the useful goodies (active notifications, always listening, wrist-twist camera), great battery life, and stellar performance; but you were upset with the camera. Would you trade it in for the new Google flagship?

I'd appreciate your take on this!

Thank you,
Ryan

I'm not speaking for Phil, but everyone whom I've read or watched have said they pretty much prefer the Moto X, due to active notifications, being able to use the "ok google now" feature while the phone is off, and other personalizations, plus the fact that it's "basically" pure Android.

I responded to this thread because I'm currently watching This Week in Google, where Laporte said this pretty much.

Thanks! I usually don't watch the videos, more of a reader, so I didn't get a chance to hear what they had to say. I'll watch tonight!

And yeah, I waited for the Nexus 5 over the Moto X because I thought the camera might make the difference (jury is still out) and have it backordered now. It's marked for shipping Nov 26 :(

I hope I don't regret it. I'm leaving VZW for this dang phone and I'm starting to think the Moto X might be the better daily driver. This has been my most challenging cellphone decision so far. Bigger than Nexus One vs. Incredible (glad I waited for Incredible!).

There were a lot of "vs. Moto X" questions in that Q&A. I won't spoil it.

I'm in the same boat, but I don't have to leave my carrier since I'm on Sprint. I can get an X for $50 on contract or the N5 on contract for $150. There's a lot to like about both phones.

Def a lot to like about both. I wish N5 was in the stores or I knew someone who had one so I could get a feel for it in-person.

I guess when all is said and done, I can't go wrong with either phone. So what if the N5 doesn't have Active Notifications, I've had a great experience with my phones so far without it so it's not an absolute deal breaker. More important, I am really tired of having a mediocre camera (Galaxy Nexus) so I'm hoping the N5 blows it away as far as photo quality and camera performance goes. Then I'll be happy. :)

I picked up the N5 on Friday. In the end the size of the X decided me. The X was just too small. I was used to a bigger phone and prefer it, not to mention I love being the first to get updates.

Interesting because a lot of people have opted for the Moto X for the same reason in reverse. Many say the form factor and size on Moto X are perfect for one-handed use and just feels right.

How is one-handed operation of the N5 for you? I find myself sometimes stretching a bit or having to shift my Galaxy Nexus in my hand to reach certain elements on occasion...

Well I had an S3 before the N5 so I was already used to the size. I text fine one handed (ala swype) but I haven't really tried anything else. I imagine I'd have to two hand some things the same way I did with the s3.

First Moto X vs Nexus 5 question happens at 11:55

I have to say, after listening to the podcast, I am even MORE uncertain about the N5. It sounds like Phil, who gets to try every Android phone out there, is hooked on the Moto X and not impressed with the Nexus 5.

Aaaack! Maybe I'll try out the N5 for a few days and ship it back if necessary...

It does. I have owned a GN before. The camera on the GN was mediocre even by the standards of it's time. The Nexus 5's holds up much better.

Low light especially is impressive. I love how little noise is in the N5's shots. Macro quality was good on the Nexus 4, and is even better on the N5.

It's pretty much - don't give up a Moto X for a Nexus 5.

But if you have a choice, Nexus 5 if the plan value works for you.

More or less. Especially considering Motorola announced that the Moto X will be getting 4.4 "in the coming weeks". I'd guess before Christmas, which is a pretty good turnaround time. They need to take advantage of the code to use the battery percentage in the status bar on 4.4, too. I would guess they would considering all their competitors have the ability to do it.
