What does sRGB do?

Sorry for the "newb" question but I have seen a few times about turning on sRGB. What does this do?
 
It refers to the display mode. sRGB is a color standard. Enabling it is supposed to set the display to more accurate colors. I prefer it. Though it will make the colors appear more subdued and less "cartoony".

Thanks! I decided to try it out. Right off the bat the display looks much nicer!
