There's a lot to like about the S5, regardless of the unwarranted hate that came immediately after they announced it.
They didn't make it a metal unibody design, but they changed the back for the better. Its the Nexus 7 back in different colors. For anyone that's used the OG Nexus 7, they know how comfortable to hold it is. This is a fantastic move and addresses the main concern most people have with the phone.
Everyone hates Touchwiz. They changed it---more than most people think. The icons are the same, but the notification center, quick settings, the settings, gallery, messaging, the dialer, contacts, and the animations are different. Michael Fisher from Pocket Now seemed pretty impressed with how fast and responsive his pre-release unit was. Also, the UI has some design symmetry now. I really can't complain about it unless it ends up being a laggy mess, but I'd bet that they learned their lesson and made it work.
There's no more menu button. It's a multitasking button now. Enough said.
The display is the same great display as before, but brighter, smarter, and apparently better in direct sunlight. I'll take it.
2800 mah battery with a more efficient processor and more powerful battery saving options. If it's really a 20% increase in battery life, that's great.
The camera sounds amazing. Even if its only a 3 mp bump, we should all know it's all about the sensors/lenses/software. I feel like this is going to be a great camera and a huge draw for this phone.
The finger scanner is kind of a miss for me. I like the idea, but I don't think you can drag your thumb sideways to make it work. So its going to be a two-handed operation and that could deter a lot of people from using it. We'll see how it goes.
Private mode is a cool idea. I'll utilize it and I know a lot of others will, too.
Bottom line is that this phone is a lot better than people give it credit for. Hell, people complained about how they were "annoyed" about how there's a Powered by Android logo on the splash screen. Really? At this point, people are just hating on this phone just to do it. It never ceases to amaze.
