Whats up All,

Just wanted to know what Generation of Android Phones you would say we are on right now....(If there is such a thing)?

I know that the G1 and other phones would be the first and Moto Droid and Hero would 2nd Gen. I would assume that the EVO, EPIC, DROID X, 2....ect would be 3rd Generation phones.

I'm just wondering cause I believe developers should strive to create apps catered to the latest Generation of phones and better. I believe this will give the Android community a big compettitor edge to the Iphone and push developers to create apps for BOTH if Apple allows them.

Its not really a "generation" we have to summarize all phones.

a "generation" of a phone is based normally on a followup phone to its predecessor.

Examples: The LG Rumor
The Rumor 2 would be the second generation Rumor phone, the Rumor Touch the third generation.

Same with Moto Droid, and Droid 2.

We cant really group all the mobile handsets into a category because they all have different features that keep 1-upping each other. Theres no standard.

If anything i would say were all in the "smartphone" generation

I think we're at the "late 1st". Core architecture hasn't changed much as far as hardware goes in the devices. Even from the G1 to the Evo 4G, it's more comparable to say a Pentium 66 to Pentium 90 than a Pentium to a Pentium II or 3.

It's easier for a device like an iphone to work on "generations", things are more complex in android but not in a bad way. The software has progressed leaps and bounds as far as overall speed from 1.6 to 2.2 but overall functionality hasn't necessarily changed all that much.

I think the 2nd generation will start with these new 800Mhz CPUs and dual core devices or other handsets taking advantage of Tegra 2 style chipsets coupled with Gingerbread.

Generally I would say;

G1 is clearly gen 1
Hero and Moment for example I would call gen 2
Droid might be a 2.5
Evo and Droid X are 3

Of course you could argue for or against this all day.

I believe it Google made things more standardized from the OS perspective...Gen 1, 2, 3....Things would be more uniformed and we would see better apps and more development.

Just look in the market, how many apps get bad reviews cause a G1 user tried to download something that was made for a EVO or Droid X.

Developers should have the option to "Check Box" what phones they believe thier software will work on. If my phone isn't checked then I won't be able to download it....Just a thought.

It is like that, for instance you can't download flash player from the market if you're not on froyo.

I'm gonna say that phone like the g1,hero, Droid are first gen phones....while recent phones like the evo, galaxy s series and recent Droid can be considered second gen. I don't think we will be in third gen. until we get dual core or some kind of innovations with battery, projectors or new screens.....this statement is extremely vague but if we were gonna categorize it would generally fall in these areas.
