What happened to Swype?

I'm getting increasingly frustrated with the Swype function on my Samsung S7. The intended word errors are so frequent and so repetitive that I hate using it. My first Android phone, a Droid 2, seemed to work much better. It was more forgiving of slightly missing a letter while dragging my finger across the screen from letter to letter. It usually picked the correct word even if I caught myself misspelling something partway through. The Samsung wants very slow, deliberate movements and it still guesses the wrong word too often. My second Android phone, a Moto X, was a little worse than the Droid 2, but nowhere near as bad as this new Samsung. What happened? Is it fixable? Can I somehow return to the original Swype from way back before it was "improved"?

I'm not sure about that feature since I haven't used the stock keyboard on any Samsung phone since 2011, but Swift Key seems to be a good alternative. Its word prediction is really good as well.
