What is a recovery password?

Last night I pulled my S5 out of my pocket and there is a new lock screen that tells me "To unlock, enter the recovery password" I am very about locking my phone before putting it in my pocket, so I find it very hard to believe that I accidentally mistyped my PIN multiple times. I don't ever remember setting up a recovery password, and have tried every combination of passwords I might have used. I tried the google device manager. When I attempt to lock the phone with GDM, I get this message, "Google has verified that a screen lock has already been set, the password you entered wont be needed"

Every time I try the wrong recovery password, it tells me I entered the incorrect recovery password 1 time and all data will be erased. The only way to avoid this is to pull the battery and try another password. I have searched all over the place and cannot find a solution. I have found 1 other person that had the same problem and ended up wiping their phone. I am trying to avoid that.

Does anyone have a clue as to how my phone got to this point, or where I might find myh recovery password? I hope it would have been in an email from Samsung but no luck there either.

Did you ever try a finger print scanner? If you have you had to setup a backup password. If you tried that try this ,booting into recovery mode (Turn off phone, then hold power, top volume button, and home button all at the same time then the first option should be reboot device then select (power button) " Reboot Device" or something similar, then maybe it will take you to do your pin.

I never set up the finger print scanner. My phone is connected to an MS Exchange server and that only allows passwords or PINS for security.

Then you should try my other suggestion. Maybe while on recovery mode you should do " Clear Cache Partion"(May be said without partion for different models (May not say Partion, don't know how to spell))

Have you ever found a solution to this problem? My husband's S5 did this exact thing multiple times when he first had it about 5 months ago. Each time it happened it wiped out the phone. Since then there had been no problems but it's now started again and has erased the phone twice in the last 2 weeks. There is no recovery password.
Thanks for any help.
