What is different between Eclair & Froyo and how it affects Fascinate?

I would like if posible to have an exchange of information about why 2.1 works on our phones and apparently 2.2 presents such a problem. This is not a thread about if or when it will happen, ok! I hope to learn what makes an update so difficult, right now it does not make sense to me based on my limited knowledge.

The speculation that I am aware of points to 2 problem areas:

1. Our phones use CDMA radio's as opposed to GSM.
2. The Samsung user interface Touchwiz or whatever is called.

In my limited understanding of the differences between 2.1 and 2.2 it is an improvevent of JIT compiler and the addition of a plug-in called Flash 10.1. If you already have existing code that handles the CDMA radio and the user interface; why such an insurmountable problem to add the Flash plug-in.

I am looking at the difference between 2.1 and 2.2 like the difference between Windows 3.0 & 3.1, not a brand new OS but merely an improvement over the same OS.

Ok, these are my opinions, now those of you that really know: please educate me. Thank you.:D

I'm not sure what problems in 2.2 you are taking about. Ive had froyo for two weeks and have no issues at all. Everything seems to work as good or better than 2.1.

different people will ahve different experiances. i have flashed the entire internet on my phone. some roms work great some brick my phone. i am running sc 2.9 voodoo and it is by far the best thing my phone has ever seen. the reason some people have problems is because we are flashing leaked software that was rejected by sammy and vzw. i dont have any issues on this flash. but a little tweaking i can replicate jsut about every problem folks are having. i flash the crap out of my phone but i also format the crap out of my phone. i do frequent data and cache wipes. i also format system and db stuff frequently. all in all froyo makes eclaire look like a sissy girl.

So in your opinion if all is good, what do you believe is the reason there is no OTA release of 2.2? Why force people to root?

Hey Smokie. I notice you only have 7 posts so in case nobody has already said it, welcome to the AC fascinate forums. I also have limited knowledge about Linux, codes, etc. I'm just a guy who has learned and gotten fairly good at rooting and flashing pretty quick.

Ibrenes, I also am loving the Froyo we have especially with Adrynalyne's superclean ROM version 2.9. But you have to remember this is still a leaked version and the official release delay is due to stability problems with getting everything packaged together. So there may be things missing from this build we don't even know about yet. Just look at the Froyo release for Sprint's Epic 4G, also a Galaxy S phone, it was out officially for one, maybe two days and they yanked it because of all the problems customers were having. So Sprint released something they thought was stable, but clearly wasn't. Makes you wonder what kind of testing they did before releasing it.

Kind of odd you mentioned CDMA because I just checked and the three galaxy S phones that don't have an official Froyo release are all on CDMA - Verizon, Sprint, and US Cellular. I also think it's more than just Touchwiz, I think a lot of it has to do with how much of their own garbage the carriers want to cram onto the phone and into the OS. IMO Google makes a damn fine OS, but then all the carriers want to get their own branding in there, so Google has to make so many different versions of the same OS. And also funny you should mentions Windows because I immediately drew a comparison that you don't see different versions of Windows for HP, Dell, Gateway, and Sony. There's only one version of windows, here it is. Why can't the carriers just leave the OS as it comes from Google and give people the option to add in carrier branded apps and programs on their own phone? Just my observations and .02.

Thank you very much, I don't post a lot but do a great deal of reading. I am hoping this thread may stimulate some discussion in regards to what makes a stable 2.1 so radically different from a stable 2.2 OTA release.

I think Android OS is a progression or a series of refinements, that may be wrong but I find it difficult to believe that 2.2 is a totally completely different new OS than 2.1. I wish I knew what obstacles the engineers are experiencing and in what expecific area.

even if we understood what the obsticles were we would still have to wait. since we are running froyo samsung has it done, it has to be whatever the carrier add ons are

I was in a VZW store for a completely unrelated reason yesterday.. but decided to ask one of the techs if he knew anything about when 2.2 was going to be released for the Fascinate. He said it's been rolling out for a while now, and it just depends on where you are in the queue before it gets pushed to your phone.. that's when I realized he was talking about the last maintenance update. I love how little they know over there.

So look at it this way. As little as WE know about this phone and its updates, I think most VZW reps know even less.. lol

That goes for a lot of things. Buy a Harley Davidson. Frequent forums, work on it yourself, and ride the hell out of it.

Then go into a dealership and you will realize just how little the guys behind the parts counter know and even worse the techs that work on the bikes.

Same thing, different brand. It truly is sad. :'(

That's funny cause I did see a post by a woman who had just gotten the fascinate and said they loaded 2.2 update on her phone at the store. She was so excited. It startled me at first then I realized the same thing, that it was just that last update and they completely told her the wrong thing. Are they actually telling people in the store they are getting flash. Major bad business right there.

I'm inclined to believe that the carrier crapware is the issue. Instead of writing a compatible app, verizon forces the manufacturers to weld all of this garbage into the ROM. If the manufacturers would stand up to the carriers on all this stupid stuff we wouldn't be having 1/2 the problems we're seeing. Notice Super Clean is so stable, but so far off the reservation.
