What is filling my internal storage?

[AC Question]

I bought a Motorola Moto E (2nd Gen) a week or two ago which is running Android 6. It has 8GB of internal memory (5GB of this is available to me).
I have installed only a few apps and I have an external 16GB SD card which any media is saved on (this is virtually empty).
I received a notification this morning saying my internal memory was nearly full. Puzzled by this, I went into the Storage settings. The main graphic says I am using about 4.5GB of internal memory; yet the breakdown of this underneath shows only around 2GB of storage is being used (1.8GB used by apps, 400MB cached data, everything else on the list is smaller than 1MB. I can't work out how to post a screenshot here, I'm happy to do so if someone can tell me how!)
Can anyone suggest what is using the rest of the space, and isn't appearing in the breakdown of the storage? Thanks in advance!

Hi, it was me who started this thread but I wasn't signed in at the time! Here's a screengrab of my Storage page:



Just to clarify, that's a 4.47GB at the top, and there's nothing below 'Cached data' except Explore (taking me into the folder view of the internal storage).

On my phone Anroid uses 3.0 GB, then everything else leaves me with just 1 GB left of the 8GB total. Once a week I turn off my phone, this is suppose to clear the cache and temp data. You can also clear the cache and app data manually as well.

You could try this app and see if there's something that doesn't show up in your storage settings.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. DiskUsage showed a large amount of space in my 'usable' 5GB was being used by system storage, which I'm not sure is usual. I eventually gave up trying to be clever and did a factory reset - which, after reinstalling apps etc, (has freed up some space although I still have the issue of more space being taken up than that which is shown in the Storage page). Anyway, thanks again for your help - if anyone else has any other suggestions I would love to hear them in case this becomes a problem again!
