I have read a lot about the One plus 5 and its "Oxygen OS". However I don't know what exactly oxygen os is. Is it its own OS that is simalar to android, or is it just the name of one pluses android skin?

OnePlus's own tweaks on Android, much like near every other manufacturer do to varying amounts.
HTC has the Sense UI, Samsung has TouchWiz, etc.
In that case it is fairly minimal in terms of changing the look, while trying to offer subjectively useful customisation.
Something it seems Samsung are taking on board with their latest offerings being less themed.

And everyone doing their own thing isn't inherently a bad thing in all respects, as many OEM tweaks have influenced or even been adopted into the core android experience.
Still it can introduce usability issues moving from one device to the next, even from one model to another.

That is something which arguable apple at least does right, providing a very consistent experience, hardware permitting, between devices.
But I do feel that is in some ways stifling them, making it stale and slow to adopt new ideas.

There are pros and cons to each, consistent or experimenting.

Rather than a skin, is a ROM, which means it has way more features and deep tuning than a skin like touchwiz

What's the support like compared to Android? Meaning for how long should I expect to receive all latest software updates on the OP5?

Oxygen os is a modified version of custom rom called lineage os or cm and it is the os one plus phones run

A rough estimate going by other companies is approx 2 years.
Though the lack of update for the 2 to Android N made that one rather shorter.
According to OnePlus the 3 and 3t will be updated to Android O.
Though they did also state the same about the 2, and plans changed.
So basically nobody knows for certain.

Project Treble by Google is from Android O going to modularise more of the code, separating the "silicon" code from the rest, and that should make updates easier to do in the future for phones with Android O and later baseline.
Though the duration of support still depends on the willingness of a company to extend the life of an old product instead of selling you a new one.

Android O on the 5 I would think is a certainty.
Android P, less certain at this point but I would hope so.

However there is depending on how popular a device is, 3rd party roms to continue beyond the official versions.

No, that's wrong.

Oxygen OS is an android ROM built from AOSP. It has nothing to do with Lineage, Cyanogen MOD (CM) or Cyanogen OS, and never has.

They simply call their skin an "OS"

That's something that someone who doesn't understand how android works would say...

See, if you select the dark theme (such as it is) in OxygenOS or download a theme from the Samsung theme store, THAT is a skin.

OxygenOS or whatever TouchWiz is called now ARE OSs. Think of them like Linux distro's, if you know what they are. Ubuntu isn't a Linux "skin", it's its own OS which is built from the base open source Linux software. Android is no different. In fact, each ROM is basically a Linux distro.

Oxygen OS is The Look & Feel of Android on OnePlus mobile devices. If I may be bold... Oxygen OS is the best & slickest Android skin there is. Too, Oxygen OS is augmented with a plethora of features that aren't available in other Android skins... Native call recording is one.
