What does it do.

If by "opposite" you mean totally opposite, as in right side of bottom edge (opposite from left side of top edge), then that'd be the regular handset microphone. But if you mean opposite, while still on top edge, that'd be the lens for infrared beaming. And in case you mean the little dot right next to earphone jack, that'd be the microphone when you switch a call to loud speaker mode.
