Just curious. I have a s4 with a padlock on startup screen and I didn't know if that meant i was rooted. I just bought this phone off craigslist.

What does the boot animation look like? The stock boot up is the Samsung logo and of course the branded Verizon startup. If you have a different animation. You are rooted. Also. You can check the about phone screen. It will give you other various info.

It starts out with a unlocked padlock then goes to the Samsung screen then the att screen.

Ok. Do you know how to take a screen shot?(hold power and volume down) Go to settings... About phone. Take a screen shot there.

You also need a photobucket account to post the pictures here. I can walk you through that after

Stupid question but can it be locked?

No no not a stupid question. And yes you should be able to relock it. Your model and carrier is different than mine so you will have to research how to go about doing it. Navigate to the ATT forum and you should find it there. Or google/YouTube search it.

If it's AT&T phone, non of the s4 devices bootloaders are unlocked. It means you have rooted phone since AT&T splash screen is showing.

Go to settings -> more -> about device and check what baseband is. If its MF3 then you are stuck on root as of now and no way of putting custom ROM nor unroot.

If you have MDL or previous ones you can install custom ROM or able to unroot if you desire stock everything.

Unlocked padlock means your software has been modified (root access/ custom rom etc.) It does not mean your boooader is unlocked.

I provided this information based on your post (AT&T carrier and unlocked padlock).

But keep in mind if you do have MF3 baseband, DO NOT try to do anything at this point or you will brick your phone.

Developers are working hard on unlocking AT&T device's bootloader or safestrap to install custom ROM leaving stock ROM untouched.

Sacrilege! MG if you have an unlocked BL you have a rare gem. Why would you want to turn it into a lump of coal?
