They didn't teach you to just divide 42 by 6? (You have a calculator in your phone if you haven't yet memorized the multiplication tables.)

Yes, it's interesting that the only way to master arithmetic is to recite the multiplication tables over and over, parrot-fashion, until you have them permanently in your head. That's how I was taught as a child, and I suppose it's still done.
