The one next to the wireless icon? Can someone offer any insight?

You can take a screen shot by pressing and holding the on/off button and pressing the home button while holding, you don't need to use the volume rocker.
That's NFC services. You usually don't need it, go to settings-> more and turn it off.

OK, I was saying, "He didn't ask about that; how did you know that he...?" And, then, I paid more attention to the screenshot he posted! Thanks for the tip, LC! I did not know that one! :)

I think the NFC icon is terrible looking and entirely too large. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, that icon would annoy me too. Must be only on AT&T though. I am on Sprint, and when NFC is turned on the icon doesn't appear.
 
An FYI, Sprint has a fairly good table of the notification icons in their HTC One User Guide, (should open to the correct page), where as I see the HTC Users guide does not have this list. Interesting.

Edit to add: Sorry, that Icon being asking about is not in the table, thought it was.
