I'm sure it does, but I do not own the phone yet. I just got curious because I saw a tempered glass screen protector with holes cut out for this sensor, but not for the front camera. I was wondering why...

its proximity sensor mate tells the phone when its to your ear and things

Its the proximity and auto-brightness sensor, proximity is used for turning the screen off when in a call and turning it on when you move your phone away from your ear.
