What is this strange message symbol?

Every so often I see this red/white 'negative' symbol. My paperwork with the phone doesn't have an icon glossary like the old days. Curious as to what this means?

+1. And to go further, if you have the stock messaging app with the blue/yellow bubbles in the chat, a failed message will be gray. If you select the failed one, then hit the menu button, you will have an option to resend. If it works, the red icon will go away.
