What phone would you offer for first time Android user?

Hi,

I have never used Android device before and I would like to get one. Would you offer my Android of iPhone ? I was thinking about Z5 or iPhone 6s but I don't know which one would be better. I expect a good camera from my phone and display. Would Japanese Android phones work overseas ?

There is a wide range of Android devices available, and many of them have both a good camera and display. Tell us more therefore about what you are looking for in a device, and we may be able to steer you in the right direction.

Bear in mind that the pure Android experience is available on Google Nexus devices, though you may prefer the customised versions of it offered by other manufacturers.

The iPhone 6s, though an excellent device, is of course an Apple product, running iOS.

Japanese Android phones, if not carrier-locked, and if the radio bands are right, ought to be usable in other parts of the world, but check those details carefully first.

Thank you for you reply. As I said before, a nice camera and display are important but I am not quite sure what to expect from an Android device. I would rather a phone with a larger screen as I like to read stuff or watch something on my phone, I text or write emails quite a lot from my phone so it is important that the keyboard is easy to type on.

What better introduction to Android than a Nexus? Check the 5X and 6P.

It kind of depends. I would actually suggest either a Nexus or even a Sony. Both are pretty minimal when it comes to skins over the OS. If I had to suggest a phone, I would say the Nexus. They will get updated as opposed to possibly updated. Samsung is hit and miss as soon as you exclude the flagships.

If you are wanting to venture into Android and don't want to spend a lot of money consider getting an older flagship and/or Nexus device (Nexus 5). Moto has the Moto G line which is also affordable. This way, you can get a sense for what Android is all about then decide to purchase something newer or higher spec'd if you decide to stick with it.

As for the overseas question, just make sure it's a GSM device and supports the carrier networks you will be using.

Gotta get something running pure vanilla android or close to it. Don't let yourself get indoctrinated into a particular manufacturer's software and way of doing things. If you learn on vanilla Android, you can easily get comfortable using any Android device.

The Moto X Pure, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Nexus 6 would all make fine choices. Look into those 4, they seem to meet your desire for a large, high-quality screen and good camera. Check spec sheets, reviews and if you're lucky to have a chance to play with any of those hands-on, do it. If price is important, the Nexus 6 is really cheap now and is still a very well built, highly capable phone. And the camera is underrated, we've taken some very good photos with ours.

In terms of the core System, no. However, the flagship Samsung models will come with features not included on a Nexus device. Don’t let that be a deterrent since you can find similar apps and services for a Nexus. The exemption being hardware differences such as the S-Pen for the note.

It's kinda like this: If you get a Nexus or other phone running vanilla or near vanilla Android, you have choices. You can run plain Android as is, which really isn't so plain anymore, or you can customize it however you want. No need to root the phone, you can go crazy customizing it as is.

But Samsung uses a pretty heavily modified version of Android. And the modifications are much more than skin deep. Samsung's Touchwiz permeates the system everywhere, deep into the OS. Samsung thinks they know best and tries to herd you into doing things their way with their software. So does Google of course, but their grip on your phone is much looser.

Also, Samsung is bad about loading their phones with bundled software, most of which is worthless or worse. They even bundle crapware like friggin' Clean Master! There can be no justification for such stupidity.

I went to test the phones, yesterday. I didn't have chance to test Nexus 6 as it is not popular in Europe that much and they didn't have it. I tried Huawei P8 instead and I did not like it, nor Samsung S6 edge and the plus version. The edge on the left side is quite disturbing while reading something or watching. They had a few different units of S6 in the store and on each of them the left edges' displays were greenish ( Is that normal ?). However, I tried Sony Z5 and a few Motorolas, they seemed very nice. Did anyone have a chance to use Sony Z5 Premium? Is it any better than the regular version ?

In Sony I liked how to phone feels in my hand, I can feel I hold something and it stays there. Also camera was very good comparing to Samsung S6 Edge + I took pictures of the same spot in the store and Samsung had problems with the light. Motorolas I liked in overall.

Generally Samsung has always been a good choice for me. I've been using Samsung Note 4 since its release, and haven't regretted a thing.
