My sms database has grown to over 6GB over the years. Sure, I on occasion refer back to an old sms from years ago which is why I haven't just started over when I move to a new phone. I'm wondering if there's a good way to backup and view on pc if I ever need to grab data from an old sms. Any ideas on what works well for this?

Or should I just restore the 6GB to my S20 Ultra?

Make a back up to smart switch, that way you can restore it back to your phone when you choose too.

I've got a smart switch backup and a backup from sms backup and restore. I commonly stay away from smart switch due to some issues I've had in the past. The S20 was manually reconfigured and I'm happy I chose this method. Yes it took 3 hours, but if I can avoid some of the quirks I've seen when doing a smart switch restore, then I'm all for it.

I wish there was an easy way to display sms backups on a pc. Yes I'm aware the sms backup xml file can be viewed, but it's quirky. Wondering if anyone else has a better mousetrap.

Hi, the only time you will run into a issue with smart switch if you try to restore from old firmware android version device, you can can simply choose just sms to restore and be fine not other setting or apps . You can also look at this app people say is great for back up sms .

Google sms viewer pc and there are a couple of apps that may work.

I have never used or needed these but see if they work for you.
