What was the point of registering for updates?

Myself, like the rest of you, registered for the latest updates on the Nexus from Google and Verizon; not Samsung however, as last time I registered for the GSII and selected my preferred carrier as Verizon they decided to notify me when it was available for everyone else and I still get emails about their other products.

I understand why I haven't received an update from Verizon, because they haven't announced anything official. However, I've been going to Galaxy Nexus and the site has been updated (a little while ago actually) with gallery photos, LTE tech details, etc. Don't you think that would warrant an email from Google? Like "Hey, check out the new details on the Nexus on our site!"

I know it really doesn't matter, but I was just wondering what you all thought. When you signed up for updates did you only want updates as to when the phone would be released? - or - Were you looking for any new details that were to surface?

I registered on all three sites. Only thing I have gotten is some marketing stuff from Samsung on other products. I realize they won't be announcing things on there that aren't already released material, but I would have expected some teasers or something. But no. Silence.

I guess they have a marketing plan, it just doesn't make any sense to me. I am betting I'll start getting emails about it being released after I get the phone.

That's why I use a throw away email for registering for things like the Nexus. I know I'm going to get oodles of marketing SPAM.

Personally, I'm not interested in Google's phone site. More upset about signing up for Verizon's e-mail list and getting nothing from them. Google's website probably doesn't have anything that we don't already know - we've seen pics, got specs, got reviews and all of that from blogs. All we need is info from Verizon.

you registered for spam and a release date email that will come a month after the phone is out.

Be ready to read the update on your phone when it comes out a few days after you've purchased it.

i registered because im an avid spam mail collector. you wouldn't believe the spam that I have plastered all over my office walls - it actually netted me an award when I was in a creative arts class here at barton county community college!

I'm aware that Google's site doesn't have anything we don't know, but not every body surfs blogs and android forums every day. It's in Google's best interest to promote the phone and if I signed up for updates then why not send something about the site being updated with new details? It's not in Google's best interest to just assume that everybody has seen the info elsewhere so why bother

I'm not sitting here holding my breath for an update and if it's like this for all releases then why even have the mailing list? I did actually get an email about the RAZR pre-order that came out shortly after it was being circulated around the inter-web

You register so you can come to AC forums to let EVERYONE know you've received an e-mail from VZW/Goog/Sammy which briefly mentions the GNexus, thus keeping all of your forummates from the obvious suicide route.

In all honesty, I believe the main purpose for allowing folks to sign up to receive e-mail updates about a product is to conduct a survey by Marketing, by determining interest in a product or service (by those interested enough to bother to take the time to submit their e-mail address).

Obviously, you'll also get spammed for other products, as you've willingly told them that it's OK to send you correspondence.

I don't really expect to hear anything regarding the Nexus release, honestly (based upon what I've heard from others during past device releases).
