You have to remember that these huge companies are extremely sophisticated and savvy when it comes to product road maps, marketing, anticipating needs, knowing their competition, knowing the cutting and realistic edge of technology that they can employ, and reacting to the ongoing flow of technological change.
I guarantee you that Google isn't suddenly in panic mode, making all sorts of changes and suddenly deciding to magically come up with a product to combat the iPad Mini (or any other competitor's products). Anything they're doing now has been in the works for quite some time. They are constantly evolving and adapting, based on the technology and R&D available now, as well as where they want to be in 6 months, a year and 5 years from now. This is a never ending flow of competition and technological evolution, and the successful companies know this and proceed accordingly. Yes, they always react to the moves of competitors, but those moves are rarely surprises, and those reactions are unlikely to result in a new high tech product one month later.
So what's next for the Nexus 7 isn't because of the imminent release of an iPad, it's because of decisions made a long time ago, partly based on what Apple and others might do, and partly based on the direction they wanted to take a while back as a leader in the industry.
With that said, what's next is improvements to the device, depending on what their market research said people want, and depending on what technology is available that will make it a better product while still maintaining a very competitive price (a price that their market research has shown that people think is competitive and are willing to pay).
What's likely? A basic 5MP rear camera, 32gb (and maybe 64gb) options for memory, and a slightly thinner profile.
What do I hope for? The above, plus an improved front camera, improved battery life, a slightly higher resolution screen with an improved viewing angle, just a tad less bezel but more screen space, a better speaker, a headphone jack that allows use of an inline mic, the same soft backing and curvature of the sides, and better overall build quality, at least so that fewer defective units leave the factory. What I'd love, but won't happen, is removable SD card storage.
