what's the purpose if you can do it through the recovery

Titanium is better when it comes to individual app backup and restore and other little things that custom recovery doesn't do.

I personally have never been a big Titanium fan, just never like the interface for it... MyBackup Root (or Pro) has been my backup of choice for doing my app & data backups.

Very clean, simple interface.

Okay, I have the my backup pro but stopped using it when I rooted. I just didn't see the need for it as long as I have my NID backup.

A great majority of custom ROM problems that people have are a direct result from not wiping or restoring all of the /data folder. The less you restore the better, and apps like TB/MyBackup let you selectively restore only what you need.

couldn't agree more. TB is what I use as you can select to restore the app only, or with the data as well. going from rom to rom though it just typically doesn't work out. (resotring the data that is) As well it keeps you from having to go back to the market to re-download all of your apps. you can just resore them as they are in the TB folder on your sd card.

Creating NAND back ups it a must but they do take up quite a bit of space though. I set up a folder on my pc for the various phones I use and move all but one back up to its respective folder. I keep one on the sd card just in case of an emergency.

My personal preference as I stated above is MyBackup. I purchased the Pro version but the free version works great as well.. 99% of the time my restores going from ROM to ROM for apps & data works perfectly.

Yeah, that's why I usually just restore the app w/ no data. It's pretty hard to remember 100+ apps to download :P.
