What's Up With Headphones?

I've been thinking of getting a pair of headphones with an in-line mic with controller but I noticed that the manual states that you don't get any sound out of this type of setup. Were they really that stupid to build a phone where you can't use this type of headphone setup? Any solutions or ideas from the user community?
