Whatsapp - emoji stopped working on Nexus 4. How can I get them working again?

whatsapp - emoji stopped working on Nexus 4

Hi,

The emoji in whatsapp appears but pressing it won't do anything.
1. The screen responds on the "emoji button" location (in other apps)
2. Rotating didn't help
3. Upgrading to 5.1.1 didn't help
4. Factory reset...

Any ideas?
