Whatsapp message retrieval

[AC Question]

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4. When connected to Wi-Fi, I have no problem receiving my whatsapp messages. But when I switch over to my mobile data, the messages does not come through unless I open up whatsapp and wait a couple of seconds. Only then does it come through. I've never had this problem before. I can't think that it can be a reception problem because then the messages would not come through at all, but it does come through, only when I open whatsapp. I think it must be some sort of data setting maybe or a push notification setting, but I don't know how to fix it or where to start looking to fix it. Can anyone help?

Ensure Whatsapp doesn't have an option to only auto retrieve messages when on wifi... Could be a data save thing.
