WhatsApp photos

I recently upgraded to the galaxy z flip 4. In WhatsApp, I don’t like to have the media (photos videos etc) automatically download to my phone. So I have it set correctly in the media settings. However, on this new phone, this seems to mean that I can’t see the photo when it’s sent to me in the whatsapp thread - the photo shows, but it’s blurred out with an icon to “tap to download” - if I tap it, it then shows me the photo BUT it also downloads it to my phone…

Anyone else having this issue?

Before any file can be shown, it has to be downloaded. PCs work the same way. The download may be to a temporary location (cache) , but it is still downloaded.
