There is nothing wrong with flashing a tar image through Odin. As long as it is an image for your phone and carrier. There is no unlock for Sprint version galaxy s3 it is an unlocked phone. There is only root and custom recovery.

Sorry if this appears to be a stupid question but I have to ask because I know nothing about rooting. What is the difference between an unlocked phone and a rooted phone? Is it that the phone has to be unlocked before it can be rooted?
unlocking only frees you from the clutches of any one phone company. Most of us who bought the GT i9300, bought them unlocked. But rooting gives you the ability to manipulate the guts of the operating system, allowing you to, say, remove one lung and replace it with the liver. This, you can delete bloatware and redundant apps, install programs that change the way your phone operates.

Google now is awesome! Raced someone with an iPhone. Google now beat Siri before Siri realized what command my friend was giving it. It was in front of a decent crowd. I loved it.

Sadly it all comes down to the carrier. If there is a hold up...It will be there. But in time I am thinking by Nov or so. BUT no one really knows when.
