When rooting a phone, how do you get updates?

When rooting a phone, i.e. the Nexus One, how will you receive updates? With the N1, you will get the latest google Android updates the day they come out. Will you have to wait for them to be cooked into ROMs?

You either have to:

A) Unroot your phone, and go back to non-rooted with the official update.
B) Wait for rooted versions of the ROM (so you don't lose what you gained)
C) Wait for root on the official rom so you're good to go.

Either way you wont get pushed updates on most ROM's as they're generally disabled.

If all you did was root, you should be fine. It's when you load a different ROM that you likely won't get updates.

Sorry I misread the initial post (thought you had a custom ROM). What Phil said applies as well.

So there is an option out there to replace the built-in email app with a custom one that allows signatures and a few other things.

If I gained root on my N1 and installed this app, would I continue to get OTA updates? Would the email app be overwritten or left untouched?

BTW, I am an Android Newbie, but an experienced Mac & Palm user. While I understand what root does on the Mac, I am not comfortable digging around under the unix hood of my macs without detailed step-by-step instructions.

I'd like to be able to continue to get OTA updates, so does that mean I should not enable root access?

Thanks,

I have a rooted Evo, I have not downloaded the latest software update yet. I am running stock rom but have wifi tether, overclocking and a couple other apps that require rooting. Is there anyway for the update to mess up my phone or remove the root?

the new OTA will mess up root for sure. there are ROMs out there that have all the updates that came in this new OTA that still have root though. you just need to install one those so you keep root.
