Hey if AC can start a blog on the naming of Android P I thought I would start a post on when do you think the Essential will get Oreo? Yes I know the phone has not shipped yet, it would be amazing to get the phone in hand early next week with the update pushing out but I highly doubt that.

My prediction is going to be Sept 15th.

Hopefully Oreo gets updated with a dark theme option for the tray and drawer. The switch to only white is odd, especially with so many AMOLED/OLED displays out there. I might block the update for a while because of it. Ironic, no? :D

It may not be in base Android but Google may do it for Pixel separately, like how other OEMs do on some of their implementations.

Well that would be dumb. :-\

Since @ChuckG73 asked for a guess, I'll go with 19 Sept since Essential seems to tack extra days on their estimates. lol

Not really, they want an iPhone competitor. Everything in iOS is all white and boring. Which is the exact reason why people switch to Android is to have something that isn't plain and like every body else.

From what I have read the essential will get oreo and the following version. I don't see why not considering it pretty much runs stock Android. Updates should be right behind the pixel and Nexus phones.

Ugh. All the more reason I'll stick with N for a while longer -- assuming security patches keep pushing, of course. Dark theme or bust.

While trying to stay positive. What if. Essential delayed by a couple days to get android O ready. That way when we get the devices the update is ready to roll as a nice surprise for customers.

Lol nice to think huh. Although not likely.

Honestly there is zero chance they are even considering shipping with Android O at the moment. They have many issues to sort out from current software, manufacturing, distribution etc and have very few resources. On the software side they will be working hard to squash the current bugs and improve on camera software since that was a major complaint. Personally I think Android O update is 2 to 3 months away on essential.

Since it is such a light version of Android my assumption is all they have to worry about is the Camera app, so it should not take that long.

Lol

No phone will ever get Android Oreo... Android O is Oatmeal Cookie. Confirmed by Google employees & there are tons of Oatmeal Cookie ref in the dev builds.

Essential has tipped that they will be announcing their Android 8.x beta program in the next few weeks. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for announcement.
