Galaxy S5 5.0 MTP Issue

I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but since I updated my GS5 to Lollipop, I haven't been able to transfer files to or from the phone through USB. When it connects to my computer all it does is charge now, and the computer doesn't recognize the GS5 as a mass storage device, as a phone....nothing. This used to be simple before the update, and as much as I searched through the phones settings and options, I can't find any settings regarding MTP. Is this happening to anyone else?? Is there a way to fix this? Thanks.

Re: Galaxy S5 5.0 MTP Issue

You could try removing the phone's driver from your computer (it should show up in Device Manger), reboot, and then let the computer try to recognize it again.

Re: Galaxy S5 5.0 MTP Issue

....or not. It work for about 5 minutes, then the same issue arose mid file transfer. I really don't know what the issue is.

Re: Galaxy S5 5.0 MTP Issue

Sounds like a software issue. If you select CAMERA MODE instead of MTP, does it still have issues?

Re: Galaxy S5 5.0 MTP Issue

The MTP switch is in the Developers Options. Turn the Developer Options switch On in settings and you can enable MTP.

Re: Galaxy S5 5.0 MTP Issue

I think its an issue with the pc. After a bunch of trial and error, if I restart both the pc and the phone, the pc recognizes the phone and connects to it. But its a one time thing because once I unplug the phone, the pc wont recognize it again until I restart both devices. Annoying, but that's the only way it works for now...at least until I can pinpoint the problem. Thanks for you help though!

Re: Galaxy S5 5.0 MTP Issue

I couldn't find developer options, but im pretty sure I have MTP enabled already. It just seems to be a weird bug that I cant pinpoint just yet.

Mmmm...nope. MTP is always available without Developer Options (when you connect the phone you actually have the option to use MTP or Camera Mode). USB Debugging mode is the one in Developer Mode.

Developer Options are not turned on by default...there's actually a funny sequence to get them active. If you don't know what they are or need them, no need to activate them. But if you ever do want them, you have to go to Settings, General Tab, About Device. There you'll find a BUILD NUMBER entry. Just tap on it repeatedly until you get Developer Options. Here's a link to a description of what they are (the article is for the Note 4, but it's basically the same for the S5)

As for the issue, since you already tried uninstalling the phone's driver and re-installing it, do you have Kies installed by any chance? If so, I'd try uninstalling the driver, uninstalling Kies, rebooting your PC and then trying again.

Re: Galaxy S5 5.0 MTP Issue

Nah I don't have Kies installed. I did some more trial and error and I still cant pinpoint what's going on. I think its certainly a PC issue....I don't have to restart the phone in order for it to work anymore, only the PC....but it still only works until it disconnects, then I have to restart the PC again. It's just such a weird problem to have.

Re: Galaxy S5 5.0 MTP Issue

Try connecting it to a different USB port in your computer. That sometimes forces the driver to react.

Re: Galaxy S5 5.0 MTP Issue

Reading through this, I'm having the exact same issue.

I've tried all of the steps mentioned above, have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, switched among 4 different USB ports on different sides of the computer, rebooted everything multiple times, etc. This was NOT an issue before lollipoop.

Host computer is a HP ProBook 650.

Yea, I tried them all. I'll just have to restart the phone anytime I want to transfer media, at least for now. Thanks for your help, as well as cyberdman :-)

Re: Galaxy S5 5.0 MTP Issue

Yea, its strange right?? restarting the phone seems to be the only fix, but you have to do it anytime you want to connect again. Maybe an issue google needs to work out in an update or something.

The following worked for me:
uninstalling the driver, connecting the phone to the PC (Windows 7 in my case) via USB, this invokes that the correct driver will be installed. :)

I also have had the same issue ever since Lollipop.I downloaded a program called "Wondershare MobileGo for Android". Every time I connect via USB with either my S5 or my Galaxy Tab S this app is able to respond and I get the job done. The only one with Lollipop that does not seem to have this issue is my Nexus 7 (2013).

So I stopped trying to connect as it always had worked prior to Lollipop.

My wife and I just upgraded from S3s to S5s and we're having the same issue. I've tried on all 4 computers in the house, all the USB ports, tried installing and uninstalling the drivers. Kies and no Kies. Nothing.

Our phones immediately upgraded to Lollipop as soon as we got home so I don't know if it worked before. The one thing I have noticed is if the phone is off each computer will recognize the MPT device in the device manager, but won't show up as a portable device in My Computer. As soon as I turn the phone off the MTP device disappears in the device manager. We have a mix of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 computers.

Is there a fix for this yet? I've googled for hours with no luck.

Hi all,

I had the same issues.. tried for hours then realised just after I bought the phone I had connected it successfully,

solution : use the stock Samsung cable [ ie the double part connector] not a generic micro USB cable

hope this helps
