I know nothing about Android. Where can I find basic information explaining how to use Maps?

what exactly were you wondering? its basically just like the web version. pan around using your finger, pinch to zoom (just like in the browser) double finger drad to "tilt" the map. rotate one finger around another to rotate the map. search for a place, tap on it, navigate, call, get more info, street view it. the layers button shows you traffic, terrain, satellite view, public transit, friends locations (if they use latitude) bike routs ect.
places shows you local resturants, bars, attractions ect.

maps is probably one of the most in depth applications around and the only way to really figure it out is to play with it yourself. but those tips above should be a good start.

I will visit Moscow soon and I would like to be able to use Maps to help find my way in case I get lost.

I want to save a map of the city so that I can access it offline. I have seen how to do this.

I want to learn how to bookmark some destinations in the town. For exemple I would like to be able to bookmark 3 destinations: my hotel, the Bolshoi Theater and the Red Square.

Once I am in Moscow, Maps would show me where I am and I would like to be able to see the bookmarks I saved. I know it could not calculate a route as it is offline but I could do that myself if I can see on the map where I am and where I want to go .

First, I'm jealous! I've been to Moscow twice and loved it both times.

Second, you should also explore the Google Play Store for additional map apps specifically for Moscow. If you can read Cyrillic (which you should at least learn, even if you don't speak Russian - it makes it easier to read road signs and match up to maps), then try Yandex.Maps or Yandex.Navigator. If you don't speak any Russian, there's an app called Offline Maps: Moscow, Russia, that looks to have transliterated text, translations, as well as Cyrillic. It looks pretty good, but doesn't offer turn by turn directions, though does have points of interest, way points, compass, street index and saved map views.

Certainly download one or two of the Metro system guides that map out their subway system. That's really the way to go, especially in winter. Their system looks complicated, but it's actually very comprehensive and logical. As a tourist (and especially if you don't speak Russian), you definitely want to stay away from the gypsy cabs - stick with the legal ones (not as adventurous, but safer).

And of course, download one of the travel guides, like the free Triposo Moscow Travel Guide. They're basic, but offer pretty good information.
By the way, if you have the time, turn off the maps and just do a little walkabout. It's the best way to discover the city. Have fun, enjoy the theater and Red Square (try a Kremlin tour, too), and try to stay warm!

Well, it thought I'd take some screenshots for you but I got this error. I haven't seen before:

Still, you can see the steps. You can't save huge areas larger than 85mb either.
