Whether replacing the CPU of the NEXUS 5X would affect the OTA service?

Since my NEXUS 5X had encountered the famous boot looping issue, as well as it was also out of warranty, I sent it to the local phone repairing shop. As the result, they replaced my phone's CPU and the IMEI also became 0. So, whether this would affect me to receive Google's OTA service?

I've reached out to some folks to see if we can get you an answer. It's definitely an interesting question.

My gut tells me not having an IMEI is going to be an issue but we'll see what some more knowledgeable folks have to say.

IMEI change shouldn't be a problem if done by an authorized repair shop. Since your IMEI is 0, I'd say it might have issues with getting updates. If you haven't already, try updating the phone through OTA to the January security patch. Otherwise wait for the Feb patch. If the OTA doesn't work, try the factory images on Google's site. If either option doesn't work, then you'll know for sure that updating isn't possible.

You likely will have issues. If ota doesn't work try a manual flash using the factory images posted by a google.

I'm inclined to agree with the others that OTA updates are no longer in the question for you. I think Google, along with carriers, use the IMEI as an ID to send updates. If there is no ID (as in the number is 0), then I don't see an OTA going through.

They likely replaced the entire mainboard not the CPU. If they did just swap the CPU your IMEI won't change.

If they swapped the whole mainboard you'll have a new IMEI. As long as it's a factory approved part the new IMEI will be fine and get updates.

Since your IMEI is zero, something went wrong. Have the people who swapped the part advise.

Thanks, Jerry! I considered suggesting going back to where the repair was done, appreciate the confirmation.
