Which Cases will Accommodate the Extended Battery?

I apologize in advance for adding yet one more Case thread, but I would really like to know, and I hope some others will also want to know, the answer to a very specific question.

Which, if any, cases will, or won't properly accommodate the Extended Battery. My question presumes the use of the battery door provided with that battery, not with the original door jammed in place.

I can state that in my opinion, the Verizon Case/Holster Combo will not fit cleanly, but that the VZN Silicon Case will, with a very slightly lifted area next to the opening for the MicroUSB port.

I like the Verizon Combo Case/Holster with my extended battery. That phone will never come out the holster by accident thats for sure. Youre talking about that 1mm gap, I didnt notice it until you mentioned it lol.

The simple answer is no hard case will fit but any soft case will.

But, if you use the standard battery door that makes for a really tight fit (as you pointed out), all cases will work.

I agree that most, or perhaps all, soft cases will probably accommodate the battery cover, but I'm not happy with the flex, texture and dust attraction of the silicone case I have now.

After digging around in some of the other Android forums, it seems this subject draws opinions that vary all over the map, with some verbal fistfights regarding which hard cases do, or don't fit properly, or whether some, but not all of a given brand and model (Rocketfish) will fit properly.

It doesn't seem to me there is an easy, absolute answer to my question, and I'm beginning to realize that I will have to just do some more comparing of cases for myself, or wait for some manufacturer to announce a case that is truly designed for this configuration.

I won't use the standard battery door on the Extended Battery, mainly to avoid any possible internal stresses that might be caused by that action. It may or may not be an issue, but I don't want to risk the long term integrity of my DX.

Maybe there are variations between units of the Combo Case/Holster, and yours may be fine, but mine didn't fit at all well with the Extended Battery installed. It wasn't a 1mm gap situation, the case strongly resisted closure, and even when forced shut, the edge of the case didn't fully reach around the right side of the unit. I was convinced it would spring off if ever dropped.

I have the Body Glove case... got it from the VZW store. Works fine with the extended battery and door.

I went to BB this afternoon to see if I could find a hard case that would work for me - focusing on the Rocketfish, because it reportedly would fit the Moto Auto Mount with the mount liner removed, and if that didn't work, the Platinum (Seidio) Case/Holster. If neither of them worked, I was going to run over to try the Body Glove at Verizon.

I tried two of the Rocketfish cases, and was almost successful, but I just couldn't get the bottom clip on either of them to fully engage, and stay engaged. I really wanted it to work, but I finally realized there was no way, and gave up on it.

I had good success with the Platinum case. As with other, I again got some resistance at the bottom, but the Platinum snapped into place, and it has stayed locked together for me for the last couple of hours, so I'm pretty satisfied it will continue to work well for me.

During the researching process, I discovered an outstanding source of reviews of cases for the DX at:

Droid X - iGear 360

The reviewer has done a superb job of organizing and presenting just about everything you will want to know about a case you are considering. He manages to give plenty of info, (except whether it will fit over the Extended Battery, of course) with excellent and clear video in his clips, which tend to run about 3-8 minutes or so, rather than the 10 minutes with less than helpful video on some other reviews. He also includes beautiful macro pictures of the cases from every angle imaginable. I can't praise what he has done on this site too highly, and I highly recommend it.

I also recommend that anyone considering a new case to enclose the DX with an Extended Battery take the time to try it out in the store, to make sure you are really satisfied that it will work for you.

I am using the "hard" silicone case from Verizon. It's smooth and flexible and does not attract dust like the traditional silicone cases but yet kind of "snaps" on like a hard case. Give it a try.

Seidio Innocase (and Best Buy Platinum Series) will fit.

Agreed- That's what I'm using. I did notice that there is a bit of a small, tapered gap just above the microusb connection, due to the 1 mm rise of the battery door, so I cut a small section of thin electrostatic free black foam to fill that area, and put the case over it. That should keep any foreign junk out.

I bought three cases. The Seidio Surface and Vzn body glove both fit well (I prefer the body glove design as the Seidio has a lip on the top and bottom that interferes with pulling down the notification window and buttons on the bottom). The VZN glossy silicon also fits but not well. The sides bow outward a bit and the opening to the power connector and HDMI plug is distorted.
