While on a call my display times out

While I am on a call my display times out and and goes black. With other phones I generally hit the power button and the display comes back on. Now when I hit the power button the phone disconnects. I cannot use the display functions once the display times out. Is there a way to reactivate the screen if the display times out?

In settings, someplace, is an option for the power button to end calls, turn that off. On my Nexus 6P it's in the accessibility section.
