Who's to blame for dragging their feet on updates for our Phones?

Re: Who's to blame for dragging their feet on updates for our Pho

I'll guess carrier. With new updates carriers have to be prepared for any new problems. I'm sure LG has the update created already but then again it could just be the opposite. They are probably delaying the update to make more sales of lower end phones or have the 4g cells singled out as gingerbread advanced for some time.

Re: Who's to blame for dragging their feet on updates for our Pho

Isn't the Optimus One already updated to Gingerbread in Europe?

You can speculate or blame whomever all you want, it doesn't matter. We'll get it when we get it, or not at all. There's nothing we can do to change it.

Re: Who's to blame for dragging their feet on updates for our Pho

LG released GB in Europe, so it has to be Sprint holding up progress. Can't we just get the stock Optimus One GB ROM for our phones? They're basically the same phone right? It should just work, or am I completely off base here?

Re: Who's to blame for dragging their feet on updates for our Pho

Probably Sprint didn't want to spend the $$ on a GB release for Optimus S. Makes sense, since S is a low end phone and GB in it wouldn't have any marketing value.

Re: Who's to blame for dragging their feet on updates for our Pho

This is an issue with all Android phones and all carriers. Who's to blame, Google + manufacturer + carrier. Manufactures and carriers aren't armed with software developers (with the exception of HTC) and they're more interested in profitability than providing timely and prolonged customer support. Google has allowed/encouraged this by not requiring manufactures or carriers to provide updates in a timely fashion. They've allowed the customer to get screwed by not employing a "must provide software support for X years after product is discontinued".

In the beginning this was an annoyance but now the issue has shifted to one of security. The proof of concept exploits are now being exploited via website drive bys!! Gov't agencies are now leery of Android. The amount of security patches from 2.2 to 2.2.2 is astonishing. We need immediate security updates like Ubuntu or Windows desktop OS. Googles purchasing of Motorola may be the answer.

I take security very seriously. Right now I won't make purchases or do banking with these smartphones until this culture changes and is a major reason why I will reevaluate iPhone, Android, Windows and RIM when I'm ready to upgrade.

Please rephrase and elaborate; what exploits are you talking about?

Also, I don't think that manufacturers do not have software developers (software engineers)... Are you serious?

ANDROIDOS_NICKISPY.C is the latest. Exploits have more than doubled in the last 6 months. Use google for more info

LG, Samsung, ATT etc are understaffed with regard to Android developers. Again, google is your friend

interesting. does it work without root?

ATT is for sure; I talked about manufacturers. I don't believe that you are not getting gingerbread in your optimus because LG is understaffed in engineers.I bet it's because Sprint doesn't care. Optimus One gingerbread is out in Europe, right?

@ memsman - Not to be a jerk but all of your questions can be answered by looking this stuff up via a search engine. My responses should have all the keywords you'll need.

No doubt there are exploits. After all we depend on some of these exploits for rooting.

However ANDROIDOS_NICKISPY.C sounds like a malicious app you are tricked into installing rather than an exploit. Everything it does can be done by legitimate apps if you grant them permission by installing them.

The reason why an old method of rooting rarely works on a newer version of Android is because the previously unknown exploit has been patched. Exploits, vulnerabilities, malware, or bugs call them what you will (I suppose I could have worded it better??).
I guess the point I'm trying to make is that this is an operating system that can handle sensitive data on the internet. It should be issued timely security updates like any other OS. I'd go as far as to say there's potential for a class action suit here given the fact these updates are intentionally held back to feed an upsale/upgrade revenue stream. I'm not asking for Ice Cream Sandwich or even Gingerbread. However, I do feel entitled to timely security updates for at least the length of my 2 year contract whether I buy the cheapest Android phone or the latest and greatest.

Exploit (computer security) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I believe this app is installed via a script from a malicious site. I haven't seen any mention that user interaction is needed for it to install. Please show me something that says different.
It's not just rouge apps but issues like the critical wifi vulnerability that was patched in 2.3.4.

Everything it does can be done by legitimate apps if you grant them permission by installing them.

This is true of any malware on any platform but when it's discovered how this was accomplished without user permission it's then patched to prevent it from happening again!! This is SOP!

Unpatched open source + attractive target = potential disaster. Anyone who follows Black Hat forums/chat rooms is well aware that the flood gates are opening. The fact that the included Google browser is incapable of updating is beyond me, Webkit alone is a large target. The average user is clueless and fanboy sites like this don't shed enough light on this subject IMO.

It may sound like I'm hating on Android but I'm not, I love it and want to see it get better. If it were "glitches" it wouldn't upset me but this is blatant and unacceptable.
