Why am I getting an alert when I get a text message on mute?

I keep getting an alert when I get a text message on mute

So starting last night I noticed that when I get a instagram notification my phone would chime and it never did that before. No big deal. However this morning I put my phone on mute and when i received a text message my phone chimes. I turned the sound off and defaulted the messages to silent but it still keeps making the same noise even though my phone is on silent.

Does anyone know how I can turn that off??

Have you tried going into the app(s) its/themselves? Go to settings> Manage Applications and uncheck the "notifications" box. This will turn off all notifications from each app you uncheck, but you may not want this. If you don't, for the chime, I would go to the app itself and see if there are any options to change the notification sound. If so, there SHOULD be a silent one. I'm just guessing with that last one, and it's not clear if you want the notifications AND chime to stop or just the chime. I hope at least some of this helps! I haven't had that problem, and if that's the only issue you're having w lollipop, you're doing great!
